newborn hearing screening

newborn hearing screening

Newborn screening or neonatal hearing screening is an early detection screening that enables us to diagnose hearing problems of a newborn within the first days of his or her life. Since 2009 the cost for that procedure is covered by your German health care provider. Customers with international insurance coverage please get informed by a representative of your health care provider to have the question of cost coverage answered. There are no outward signs of a newborn that could hint towards hearing problems of the child. Only later in life will they develop into deviations of normal social and emotional development and speech development might be greatly handicapped. Without newborn hearing screening hearing disabilities will usually be diagnosed by the age of two or three - but this is way to late for a regular speech development process.

When your baby gets born at a hospital the newborn hearing screening will be done before you and the baby get discharged from the hospital. Did you give birth to your child at home, at a birth house or a birth center then you will find us to be a competent and important partner to assure your baby's health in respect to hearing. For newborn hearing screening we use two procedures: otoacoustic emission (OAE) and auditory brainstem response (ABR). Both of these procedures can be performed while your baby is sleeping and are completely painless.

What shall I do if my baby fails the test?
If your baby passes the test we can pretty much exclude any kind of hearing disability for your child. If a possible hearing loss is found it doesn't automatically mean that your child has a hearing disability. One out of 40 kids that test positive in the newborn hearing screening actually has a hearing disability. The important thing is that further diagnostic testing is being done, using more accurate examinations to either confirm that your baby's hearing is normal or not. As we specialize in pediatric hearing diagnosis and treatment we have all the diagnostic tools and procedures at hand to either exclude or confirm if your baby has a hearing disability. All procedures and examinations are safe to use and pose no health risk at all for your baby.
