Here you will find the most frequently asked questions concerning the topics of cosmetic-functional rhinoplasty. Please contact me if your question is not answered here.

Is general anesthesia required for rhinoplasty?

General anesthesia is the safest route to take when undergoing rhinoplasty surgery. General anesthesia is performed by very skilled anesthesiologists that use most modern anesthesia which are fine-tuned for every single patient. Only with certain smaller nose tip surgery or smaller revision rhinoplasty an ambulant procedure utilizing local anesthetics is the reasonable way to go.

How long do I need to be hospitalized after rhinoplasty surgery?

No long hospital stay is usually needed after rhinoplasty surgery except for should complications arise. After simple rhinoplasty surgery my patients can usually be discharged from the hospital next day, if family or friends can take care of and attend to the patient at home. After more extensive rhinoplasty surgery patients will stay at the clinic up to 5 days, so I can monitor the healing process and make sure that there are no complications. Post-op care will take place at my office with scheduled appointments.

Is rhinoplasty surgery painful?

Most patients experience none or only minor pain after rhinoplasty surgery. Depending on the kind of procedure some patients experience a feeling of tension in the areas of surgery, because swelling of the tissue takes place. Should there be considerable pain after rhinoplasty surgery pain medication can be administered.

Is there a minimum age limit for rhinoplasty?

I usually only perform aesthetic-functional rhinoplasty after the body stops growing, so generally speaking surgery is perfomed at or after the age of 17.

What is the success rate of rhinoplasty surgery?

In my opinion the success of rhinoplasty can be judged according to 3 criteria:

  1. Your new nose has a beautiful, well balanced appearance in respect to width, length and shape and the tip of the nose enhances the symmetry and proportion of the face
  2. Your new nose is in harmony with your facial features so that a new harmonic facial appearance is created
  3. Your nasal breathing works well or better than ever before

My years of practical experience and scientific research combined with new developments and refinements in surgery techniques all add to the fact that nowadays the success rate of rhinoplasty procedures are very good. Being a rhinoplasty specialist I achieve very good cosmetic results and correct nasal breathing disfunction even when a patient has enormous deformity of the nose. Rhinoplasty is and has always been a very complex and individual procedure and the result of surgery depends very much on the initial situation of the patient. Every nose is different, that is why some surgical procedures will be required for one rhinoplasty to deliver great and satisfactory results, but in other cases different approaches to the problem need to be taken to deliver expected results. That is the reason why the initial consultation is of such utmost importance.Your candidness during consultation has great influence on the success and safety of your rhinoplasty. The clearer you can state your expectations and visions of the desired outcome the better I can diagnose, recommend and discuss with you necessary surgery procedures specific to your case to achieve the best possible results.

When can I return back to work and get back to my regular way of life?

After rhinoplasty swellings and hematoma of the nose and facial tissue in varying degrees will happen. Most patients will have to wear a splint for an average time of about 10 days. Some patients are required to have their nose taped for about another week. During a regular recovery and healing period you will be able to resume all social activities in about 2 or 3 weeks after the bruises and swellings have subsided. Should the healing process be incomplete at that point of time we will give you specific instructions as a guideline that you will have to follow to aid in the further healing process.

How long do I have to wait until I can take up athletic activities or sports again?

You are advised to stop all athletic activity for the first 3 weeks after rhinoplasty. After that it is recommended that you engage in light athletic activity for about another 3 weeks. You need to be very careful with all kind of sports that require effective and heavy body contact and/ or have a high risk of getting injured.

Are there any risks or complications when performing rhinoplasty?

Being an experienced rhinoplasty specialist who has performed more than 3000 rhinoplasties I know how to minimize the risks during surgery. However like with any plastic surgery, rhinoplasty has some potential risks such as in rare cases bleeding after surgery can occur, or temporary obstruction of your vision might happen after some heavy swelling of your eyelids. Infections rarely happen after rhinoplasty. The risks depend on the rhinoplasty procedure ítself - the duration of the procedure, necessary steps that need to be completed - and vary greatly. A realistic estimate can only be given on a case-by-case evaluation. Call now for a free consultation at my office.

Will there be permanent, visible scars after rhinoplasty surgery?

I use cutting-edge surgery techniques when performing rhinoplasty for that reason incisions are placed inside the nose and thus scars are completely invisible. In certain cases rhinoplasty procedures require to have incisions made externally. But even then due to clever planning of surgery manoeuvers, innovative surgery techniques and avant-garde sewing techniques scars will be practically invisible and / or barely noticeable. Your individual healing process and the healing of the scars is not entirely predictable, because it is dependent on so many factors.
